About and methodology
SC Playoff Predictor projects South Carolina High School League football playoff seeding from the MaxPreps RPI and lets you change the winner of any regular-season game to see what happens. It is an unofficial projection and is not affiliated with the SCHSL or MaxPreps.
The RPI formula
RPI = 0.40 × WP + 0.30 × OWP + 0.30 × OOWP
- WP: a team's wins divided by games played.
- OWP: the average winning percentage of its opponents, leaving out each opponent's games against the team itself.
- OOWP: the average OWP of its opponents.
Seeding rules
Class 3A
- 24 teams: 12 Upper State (Regions 1, 2, 3); 12 Lower State (Regions 4, 5, 6).
- Region champions get the top seeds on their side, ordered by RPI.
- Next come each region's other automatic qualifiers (top 2 in the region), ordered by RPI.
- The remaining seeds go to the best remaining RPI on that side.
- Opening round: 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 7 v 10, 6 v 11. The top 4 seeds have a bye. The higher seed hosts.
- Lower State is the home team in the State Final.
Projected region finish uses region games only: region winning percentage, then head-to-head when exactly two teams are tied, then RPI. Official SCHSL tiebreakers can differ. Once a spot is clinched it is entered by hand and shown as clinched.
How What-If works
Not every opponent has a schedule loaded here (private-school leagues, out-of-state teams, and so on). So the engine starts from each team's published MaxPreps numbers, works out how much of its OWP and OOWP comes from opponents it cannot model, and freezes that part. Everything else is recomputed from the game list with your picks. With no changes, the result equals the MaxPreps RPI exactly.
Known limitation: flipping a game against an opponent whose schedule is not loaded changes your team's record, but it does not change that opponent's record as seen by other teams. Teams marked "schedule not loaded" stay at their MaxPreps RPI.

Data and updates
RPI values and records come from the public MaxPreps rankings. Schedules, regions, and bracket formats come from the SCHSL. Data is updated by hand about once a week during the season; each class page shows the timestamp of its RPI data.
